Srinagar: A search operation is underway for one of the two soldiers who were struck by an avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil sector on Saturday. One of them has been rescued and is reportedly in a stable condition.

The soldiers were on a surveillance duty in the area, ANI reported.

Earlier today, the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) had issued an avalanche warning for higher areas of the state, advising people not to venture in these areas over the next 48 hours.

The warning was issued for areas like Baramula, Kupwara, Bandipur, Kargil, Rajouri, Gandarbal, Doda, Poonch, Riyasi and Ramban districts.

Last month, 10 soldiers were buried under snow after a major avalanche hit their camp in the Siachen glacier.

The camp was located at a height of 19,600 feet.

The incident once again highlighted the risks involved in keeping a vigil at the world’s highest battlefield, an expense of inhospitable terrain at heights of 21,000 feet.
