J&K Governor NN Vohra invites PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti to form government

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on Saturday invited PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti to form the government in the state, a media report said.

According to PTI, Governor N N Vohra on Saturday evening invited Mehbooba Mufti to form the government of Jammu and Kashmir.

The swearing-in will take place at 11 am on April 4 at Raj Bhavan in Jammu.

Earlier, her party had announced that she would take oath as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on April 4 and the decision was conveyed to the governor.

Jammu and Kashmir was put under Governor's Rule on January 8, a day after the then chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed passed away in New Delhi.

Party sources say that the decision to take oath earlier than expected was necessitated to set to rest media speculation that a tug of war had started between PDP and BJP over portfolio distribution.

BJP’s Nirmal Singh will take oath as the deputy chief minister of the state.

Mehbooba had been seeking assurances from the Centre on the implementation of the agenda of the alliance and the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) framed by the two parties last year.

However, her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 22 ended the over two-month-long deadlock on government formation in the state.

The BJP had sought equal number of portfolios as the PDP.

In the earlier Cabinet, the PDP had 11 portfolios while the BJP had seven.

BJP has 25 MLAs and PDP has 27 MLAs in the 87-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
