Udhampur: Protests broke out on Thursday in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, after "carcasses of three cows" were found behind the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, police said.

Irate protesters blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Chenani tehsil, they said.

On the assurance of Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, the protestors allowed the traffic to ply on the national highway, however, the traffic on various other routes continued to be interrupted by them.

"We were assured by the DC that he would get the culprits behind bars in the next 24 hours," a protestors said.

Tension has gripped Udhampur district in the wake of the incident.

"Three carcasses of cows were found behind the SDM office in Chenani tehsil of the district," a senior police officer claimed.

"Three dead crows have also been recovered from the site which indicate that the cows were first poisoned", the officer said.

As the word of the incident spread, a large number of people took to the streets. Shopkeepers and traders also downed their shutters, he said.

People also burnt tyres and demanded stern action against the culprits.
