Chandigarh: Self-styled 'godwoman' Radhe Maa, facing charges of involvement in a dowry harassment case and also of instigating several people to commit suicide, is a worshipped figure in Dorangala village of Gurdaspur district in Punjab.

Radhe Maa was born and brought up in Dorangala village.

In her native village, the controversial godwoman, who enjoys support of many influential people from all walks of society, is a respected figure and her pictures can be seen almost at every house and shops. The villagers worship her with immense respect.

According to a report published in the BBC, the people of Dorangala village don't believe in the accusations levelled against Radhe Maa. The villagers are confident that their divine figure will come clean of all the allegations.

Speaking to the BBC, former village panchayat head Varinder Kumar said that during her childhood days Radhe Maa used to write 'Jai Mata Di' on her notebooks and had immense faith on goddess Kali.

The villagers have also put up photograph of Radhe Maa in the Kali temple.

However, Radhe Maa claims to be a self-confessed fan of actor and former adult movie star Sunny Leone. Her pictures in short dresses, gyrating to Bollywood tunes with her devotees during satsangs (religious discourses) have gone viral on the social media networks.

A woman has alleged that Radhe Maa instigated her husband and in-laws to demand dowry from her, even though she had given them jewellery worth over Rs 102 crore at the time of the marriage.

Office-bearer of a Mumbai-based organisation, 'Kutch Ladayak Manch', Monday told news channels that Radhe Maa was responsible for suicide of seven persons on March 7, 2014, at Ningal in Anjar tehsil of Kutch district in Gujarat.

Radhe Maa has remained unfazed by the allegations and claimed that she was a "pure and pious" woman.

“I am pure and pious. I respect media, police and law. I am sure that God will do justice,” she told the media.
