CPI on Sunday re-elected S Sudhakar Reddy as its General Secretary.

Puducherry: CPI on Sunday re-elected S Sudhakar Reddy as its General Secretary.

Gurudas Das Gupta was elected as Deputy General Secretary, party National Council Secretary Shameem Faizee told reporters here at the concluding day of the five-day 22nd national Congress.

It also elected D Raja, Shameem Faizee, Amarjeet Kaur, Atul Kumar Anjaan, Ramendrakumar, Pannian Ravindran and Dr K Narayana to the party Central National Secretariat, he said.

A nine-member Central Control Commission, a 125-member National Council and a 31-member National Executive were also elected, Faizee said.

More than 20 per cent of the members of the National Council and the National Executive were new faces, he said

Reddy said there were lively discussions at the meet and the party had decided to re-establish its "independent image" as champions of the downtrodden sections.

He underscored the need for Left unity to defend secularism, constitutional right to speech, democracy and cultural independence. "The delegates provided valuable suggestions to strengthen the party from root level", he said.

Reddy alleged that the BJP government at the Centre was adopting "anti-people policies and this should be opposed tooth and nail". The party would observe May 14 as all India protest day to oppose the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill.

The 90th-anniversary of the foundation of CPI would be observed on December 26 and the whole year had been declared "the Organisation Year", Reddy said.

Gupta said the country was going through a "serious economic and political crisis" as the Centre was represented by the "corporate power" and unleashing attacks on common people and democratic forces.
