South Australia keen to assist Centre in Clean Ganga campaign

After Germany, South Australia has also offered to assist the Centre in its 'Clean Ganga' campaign, a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mumbai: After Germany, South Australia has also offered to assist the Centre in its 'Clean Ganga' campaign, a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

South Australia has offered to provide its expertise in water management sector by developing institutional framework and capacity building.

"We wish to participate in the government's Clean Ganga programme by assisting it in capacity building and developing institutional framework. There is a long standing tie between India and South Australia in various sectors," South Australian Minister for Investment and Trade Martin Hamilton-Smith told PTI here over the weekend.

He said institutional framework is the precondition for the successful implementation of many other sanitation and water management interventions.

Smith said South Australia depends on India for construction expertise while the state can collaborate with India in various fields like energy, education, water management, mining services, defence and aerospace, among others.

He said clean Ganga project is not just about cleaning the river but efficient water management is also crucial.

"It is important to determine water resources situation and developing its institutional framework. At the same time, operational strategies for water sector capacity building must be tailormade. We have extensive expertise in this field," he said.

Earlier this year, Germany had decided to provide 3 million Euro to support the Ganga rejuvenation plan and explore various options to develop the country's national river.

'Clean Ganga's is one of Modi's ambitious projects. The Prime Minister, through the 'MyGov' website has called for suggestions to clean this river. The Centre is keen to bring about a radical change in the river's condition.
