New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday attacked government on the issue of growing intolerance in the country. While speaking in a debate on occasion of the Constitution Day, Gandhi said basic ideas of the Constitution are under threat.
"Congress struggled for the Constitution but today we see the basic ideals of our Constitution are under threat. Those who have no respect for the Constitution and have no role in the making of the Constitution are claiming to be safeguarding the Constitution," said Sonia.
"There is no doubt that the Constitution gave an equal voice to the poor and gave secular values to the country. What we have been witnessing from past few months is completely against the values that have been ensured by our Constitution," added Sonia Gandhi.
Earlier, speaking in the Lok Sabha in the two-day long special sitting of parliament to discuss commitment to the constitution as part of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr BR Ambedkar, the home minister also paid tribute to first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Rajnath said Union government under leadership of PM Modi was committed towards safeguarding of the Constitutional values.
"Fundamental rights are lungs and soul of our Constitution. Whoever is born from the womb of mother India, they are all Indians and we are all brothers," said Singh.
