Review of MoUs between India, foreign countries an 'ongoing exercise': Govt

New Delhi: The Government has initiated the process of reviewing Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed between India and foreign countries as part of the "ongoing exercise", Rajya Sabha was told on Thursday.

"It is understood that the Cabinet Secretariat is in the process of reviewing MoUs signed by the Government of India with foreign countries in consultation with line ministries. As far as the Ministry of External Affairs is concerned, reviewing of MoUs is an ongoing exercise," Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said in a written reply.

His remarks came in response to a question by Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut on whether Government is preparing to review the ineffective MoUs signed by the country with various nations.

A newspaper report earlier had it that the Cabinet secretariat has called a meeting of key ministries to review all memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed with foreign governments which are over five years old but have registered little progress.

The report had said that the aim of the meeting was to decide whether these MoUs should be kept alive.

Government of India has reportedly signed 82 MoUs between 2005 and 2009.
