President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday extended greetings and felicitations to the government and the people of Montenegro on their national day.

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday extended greetings and felicitations to the government and the people of Montenegro on their national day.

"On behalf of the government, the people of India and on my own behalf, I have the pleasure to convey warm greetings and felicitations to you and to the friendly people of Montenegro on the occasion of your national day," Mukherjee said in a message to President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic.

"India and Montenegro enjoy a tradition of warm and friendly relations. I am confident that our cooperation will continue to grow in the years to come to our mutual benefit," an official release here cited the president as having said in his message on the occasion.

"Please accept, excellency, my best wishes for your personal health and well-being and for the progress and prosperity of the friendly people of Montenegro," he added.

On July 13, in 1878, the Berlin Congress recognised Montenegro as the 27th independent state in the world.

The statehood day of Montenegro on July 13 is, however, distinct from its independence day, which is observed on May 21 and celebrates the plebiscite of 2006 when the majority of the voters decided to become a sovereign state, separate from Serbia.
