New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjeehas condoled the passing away of veteran Congress Party leader Rameshwar Thakur.

In a condolence message to Thakur's son, Sushil Thakur, the President has said, "I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of Shri Rameshwar Thakur.

Shri Rameshwar Thakur was a veteran Congress leader and able administrator who contributed to the nation's growth and welfare. He served the nation with distinction as a member of the Union Council of Ministers and Governor of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. The nation will always remember him for his valuable services and pursuit of excellence in public life.

In his death, I have lost a close friend whose memories I shall forever cherish.

I pray to the Almighty to give your family and you the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and convey the same to all other members of your family".

Thakur was born in the village of Tahkur Gangti in Jharkhand's Godda District on July 28, 1927 and died on January 15, 2015. He was 87.

He was a senior Indian National Congress politician and former union minister of India. He was the Governor of Madhya Pradesh from 2009 to 2011 and Governor of Odisha from 2004 to 2006. He was the Andhra Pradesh Governor from 2006 to 2007 and the Karnataka Governor from 2007 to 2009. He was a Chartered Accountant. He was also President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India from 1966 to 1967.

Thakur also served as President of the Bharat Scouts and Guides from November 1998 to November 2001, and again after November 2004.
