New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday jointly dedicated India the first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
The unveiling ceremony took place via video conferencing.
"In dedicating Kudankulam nuclear power plant we mark another historic tie between India and Russia," PM Modi said.
"Today's event is also a joyful occasion for the team of engineers in India and Russia, we salute them for their relentless work," the PM added.
The first unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant attained criticality in July 2013.
Till now, more than 10,800 million units of power has been generated from the first unit.
This 1,000 megawatt Kudankulam nuclear power plant was built with Russian expertise following a pact between the then Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Soviet leader Mikahil Gorbachev in November 1988.
The first unit was synchronised with southern power grid on October 22, 2013 and commercial power generation started by the end of December 2014.
