New Delhi: Amid a row over snooping on close relatives of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, his grandnephew Chandra Bose on Monday said that the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna should be taken away from former prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.

Speaking to ANI, Bose said, “There's an attempt to distort Subhas Chandra Bose's image. Historians can have opinion, but not a right to distort history.”

He further added, “Nehru's character is now open to public eye, his Bharat Ratna should be taken away.”

Meanwhile, some reports have claimed that PM Narendra Modi has invited the whole family of Netaji to meet him in Delhi on May 17.

PM Modi had recently met grandnephew of Bose, Surya Bose, in Berlin and discussed the surveillance issues and declassification of all secret files related to Netaji.

While speaking to reporters, Surya had said that he discussed surveillance issues and declassification of files with PM Modi.

He further added that PM had assured him that he will look into it seriously and then make a decision.

On being asked about having any clue about the matter inside the files, Surya Bose said, “Don’t know whats in the files, there may be no substance or be worse, or disappointing. Have to wait for files to get declassified.”

He further hit out at the last UPA government and said, “Manmohan Singh Govt didn't do anything for other reasons. People of India want the truth come out, movt has caught huge momentum & we should act so that Govt does something about it.”

Two declassified IB files had recently revealed that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s government had ordered surveillance on Netaji’s kin between 1948 and 1968.

The files reveal that the IB had resumed British-era surveillance on the two Bose family homes in Calcutta at Woodburn Park and Elgin Road.
