Delhi: Heatwave continued to sweep several parts of the country on Wednesday with one person dying of sun stroke in Kerala.
While in Odisha the highest temperature of 46.3 degrees Celsius was recorded at Subarnapur, followed by Talcher at 45 degrees and Angul at 44.7, Delhi woke up to a sunny morning with traces of haze and a minimum temperature of 22.2 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average.
The maximum temperature settled at 40.7 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal.
On the other hand, Kerala continued to sizzle with the temperature touching 41.6 degrees Celsius at Malampuzha in Palakkad district today, the highest in the state for the second day.
Odisha:
Bhubaneswar Met department director Sarat Chandra Sahu said the heat wave would continue in many parts of the state for a few more days.
The state government received reports of deaths of 112 people due to sunstroke, the special relief commissioner's office said.
"On inquiry, the death of 8 people due to sunstroke has been confirmed. In 40 cases, death occurred due to other reasons. The remaining 64 cases are under inquiry," it said, as per IANS.
The special relief commissioner's office said adequate measures have been taken to ensure drinking water facilities in both rural and urban areas.
As many as 542 tankers have been engaged and 1,234 plastic water tanks placed to meet the requirement of water in urban areas.
Similarly, 955 tankers have been engaged for supply of water in rural areas.
Andhra Pradesh:
In Andhra Pradesh, there was some respite from the heatwave for the locals as rainfall occurred at isolated places over coastal areas of the state.
While 3 cm rainfall was recorded at Araku Valley in Visakhapatnam district, dry weather prevailed over Rayalaseema, YK Reddy, Director in-charge, IMD said in a statement.
Jangamaheswarapuram, Anantapur, Kurnool and Nandyal recorded the maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius.
Jharkhand:
Heatwave conditions were experienced across Jharkhand with steel city Jamshedpur recording a maximum temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius, the highest in the state.
Bokaro registered 43.5 deg C, while Ranchi recorded 42 deg C, Met office sources said.
Coal city Dhanbad experienced a high of 44 degrees Celsius, it said.
Garhwa and Dumka recorded 43.6 deg C, while Palamau and Chaibasa experienced 43.4 deg C and 43.1 deg C respectively, the sources said, as per PTI.
Jamtara recorded 42 degrees Celsius and Giridih and Lohardaga recorded 41 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.
Khunti and Latehar experienced 39 deg C.
The Jharkhand government yesterday asked all private and government schools to announce summer vacation from May 8 following the heat wave condition in the state.
Directions were also issued to suspend classes for standards one to eight from April 28 and reschedule timings of standards nine to twelve from 6.30 am to 10.30 am till the vacation.
Kerala:
In Kerala, Kannur recorded 39.2 degrees Celsius and Kozhikode 38.2 degrees Celsius, IMD Regional centre sources said.
Some places in the state received summer showers giving some respite for the people.
70 cases of sun burn and one death has so far been reported from the district, Palakkad District Medical Officer, Dr Reetha, told PTI.
A farmer was provided treatment at the outpatient ward today after he suffered sun burns following exposure to sun for over two hours.
"Most of the cases being reported are burns in the back of the neck and shoulders," she said.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is holding a meeting here tomorrow to evaluate the issues related to drinking water scarcity.
Punjab and Haryana:
Maximum temperatures across Punjab and Haryana including Chandigarh today hovered a few degrees above normal limits, with Hisar sizzling at 42 degrees Celsius.
Hisar in Haryana was the hottest place in the state while Ambala too braved a hot day at 40 deg C, the MeT Department said.
Karnal recorded a high of 39 deg C, while Chandigarh was 39.4 deg C.
Ludhiana was the hottest place in Punjab at 40.6 deg C followed by Amritsar at 40.2 degrees C and Patiala at 40 degrees Celsius.
Bihar:
Heat wave condition will continue to prevail for the next couple of days in Bihar, with Patna and Bhagalpur recording a maximum temperature of 43.6 degrees Celsius today making them the hottest places in the state.
Patna Met department scientist R K Giri told PTI that there will be no respite from the scorching summer for some more days and the weather pattern will remain unchanged in Bihar.
Though the maximum temperature may drop by a few degrees here and there, the weather will stay hot and dry in most parts of the state in the days to come, he said.
Besides Patna and Bhagalpur, Purnea recorded 37.8 as the day's maximum temperature, the Met office said.
Patna district administration had yesterday ordered advancement of summer vacation in all schools and academic institutions here with effect from May 5, district magistrate Sanjay Agrawal said.
