New Delhi: A duo has been arrested here for allegedly duping people after promising that they would "show" them god, police said.
The accused were arrested from Old Delhi and have been identified as Nadir Hussain (50) and Abdul Rehman (28), members of what police called the "meetha thug" gang.
They used to allegedly tell gullible people they would "show god" to them and charged money for that, police said.
"Their activities came to light when a complaint was received from the Lahori Gate area that the duo had duped a man of Rs 22,000 by promising to show him god," said DCP (North), Madhur Verma.
Thereafter, following a tip-off that the duo was operating near Fatehpur Masjid in Old Delhi, police laid a trap and apprehended them yesterday.
During interrogation, the accused told police that they used to pretend to be godmen in order to cheat people, police said.
They were active at various tourist spots, including Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Taj Mahal in Agra and Dargah Ajmer in Rajasthan, police said.
A case has been lodged against the duo and police have recovered some articles, including fake gemstones, from their possession.
