New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday demanded a probe of arms dealer Abhishek Verma's claim that Congress leader Jagdish Tytler had received a clean chit in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case after he met former prime minister Manmohan Singh, terming the charge as a 'very serious allegation'.
"We see how one of the main accused Jagdish Tytler had talked to former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Manmohan Singh would have probably influenced the CBI director. This is a very serious allegation, an investigation needs to be done. If this has happened, then it shows how CBI was used by the previous government and how a prime minister was influencing a very serious case," BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told ANI.
Verma, an accused in the Naval War Room leak, has reportedly told the CBI that Tytler had told him in 2008 that he got a clean chit after meeting Manmohan Singh. Verma had also claimed that Tytler had tried to influence a witness in the riots case.
Tytler was among the three prominent leaders named in the reports on anti-Sikh riots case.
The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which claimed the lives of almost 3,000 Sikhs, were triggered by the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by her two Sikh bodyguards.
