New Delhi: India on Monday celebrated its 70th Independence Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in the national capital.

India achieved its freedom after a long struggle, in which lakhs of people sacrificed their lives to freely breathe in their own motherland.

The then Britain Prime Minister Clement Richard Attlee appointed Lord Louis Mountbatten as the the last Viceroy of India.

A rare picture of Mountbatten saluting the Indian national flag on 15 August, 1947 with former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the backdrop, was today tweeted by indianhistorypics.

Mountbatten is also credited of being the first Governor-General of the independent Union of India (1947–48).

Mountbatten was a British naval officer. He was an uncle of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
