The Indian Army chief, General Dalbir Singh , on Friday expressed grief at the death of 10 soldiers who were trapped in an avalanche at the Siachen glacier in Jammu and Kashmir`s Ladakh region.

New Delhi: The Indian Army chief, General Dalbir Singh , on Friday expressed grief at the death of 10 soldiers who were trapped in an avalanche at the Siachen glacier in Jammu and Kashmir`s Ladakh region.

"The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has ordered deployment of additional resources including radars to reinforce rescue efforts," a spokesperson said.

"This massive rescue operation will continue at heights of approximately 20,000 feet."

Ten soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), went missing on Wednesday after an avalanche hit their post located 19,000 feet above the sea level in southern side of the glacier.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday condoled the death of soldiers.

"Demise of soldiers in Siachen is very tragic. I salute the brave soldiers who gave their lives to the nation. Condolences to their families," Modi said in a tweet.
