New Delhi: Doctor-turned-IPS officer Ajoy Kumar, who joined the Congress last month, was on Friday appointed as a spokesperson of the party.

The 52-year-old Kumar, known for his tackling of mining mafia in Jamshedpur during his tenure as the Superintendent of Police (SP) there, had joined the party last month.

A former JVM(P) MP from Jamshedpur, Kumar had quit the IPS service and joined the corporate sector.

He later joined Babulal Marandi's JVM(P) and became an MP in 2011, defeating Congress' Banna Gupta.

He had joined Congress last month in Ranchi vowing to fight the "communal forces" during the coming assembly election.

He was defeated in 2014 Lok Sabha polls by BJP's Vidyut Baran.

Kumar hails from Karnataka and there were speculations that he could be nominated for Rajya Sabha from his native state in future.

"Ajoy Kumar, ex-MP of Jharkhand has been added to the list of existing spokespersons," AICC general secretary and Communication Department Chairman Ajay Maken said.
