New Delhi: Domestic carriers, including erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines, had made 31 precautionary or priority landings and 114 emergency landings at various airports in the country due to engine defects or failure, medical and other reasons in last three years.

Most number of precautionary landings (18) were made by the planes of Air India and Air India Express, followed by private carrier Jet Airways (8), Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said in written reply in Lok Sabha today.

Two flights each of budget carrier IndiGo and SpiceJet and one of now defunct Kingfisher Airlines made precautionary landings due to engine defects or failures during this period, he said.

Of the 114 cases of emergency landings, 101 were due to the medical reasons onboard while the rest for other reasons.

"All incidents except emergency landings due to medical issues are investigated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau or Permanent Investigation Board of the concerned airlines depending upon the severity of the case," Sharma said.

Safety recommendations emanating from investigation reports are followed up for implementation with the agencies concerned so as to prevent recurrence of similar incidents in future, he said.

On the additional measures taken by the DGCA to prevent such incidents, Sharma said engineering inspection has been revised and new procedures have been introduced.

He further said the case study of the incidents has been included as part of annual refresher training programme.

The human factor training has been devised based on the area of operations of the personnel, he said, adding for the lapses, and action against the involved crew or maintenance personnel has been taken.

Corrective training has been imparted to the concerned crew or maintenance personnel, he added.
