10 Indian fishermen injured in attack by SL navy

More than 10 Tamil Nadu fishermen on Tuesday suffered injuries and bruises when they were attacked by Sri Lankan Navy personnel when they were fishing near Katchatheevu, ignoring their warning, police said.

Rameswaram: More than 10 Tamil Nadu fishermen on Tuesday suffered injuries and bruises when they were attacked by Sri Lankan Navy personnel when they were fishing near Katchatheevu, ignoring their warning, police said.

One boat which was broken by the navalmen had to be towed by the fishermen with the help of another boat.

Police said they also dumped the fish catch of the fishermen into the Sea.

Earlier the navalmen had warned the fishermen not to enter their territory, which was ignored by them, a Fisheries Department official quoting a fisherman said.

Fishermen's association president S Eemiret said the navalmen entered the boats of 10 fishermen and threw their catch into the sea and damaged their equipments before attacking them indiscriminately. They also threatened to arrest them if they violated the IMBL in future.

Katchatheevu was to ceded to Sri Lanka through treaties in 1974 and 1976.
