Washington: A has revealed that the hair loss a consequence of chemotherapy could be halted by the use of special scalp cooling devices used before, during and after treatment.
Omar Hussain co-author, alongside four University of Huddersfield scientists plus colleagues from a research institute in the Netherlands have summarized the results of lab tests that have provided experimental evidence that cooling could markedly reduce the hair loss caused by some of the drugs most commonly used in chemotherapy. This has been supported by the clinical evidence.
The scientist has described how he replicated the effect of scalp cooling in laboratory conditions and a patient would wear a scalp cooler for 30 minutes before chemotherapy; continue to wear it during treatment and for 90 minutes afterwards.
Hussain had tested the response of more than 50 people, Paxman staff plus University staff and students, wearing the device and after extensive testing and research the team has planned to launch a fourth generation scalp cooler in 2016.
