New Delhi: Mood swings happen naturally to almost every person at some point of time due to many reasons.

But, sometimes it becomes a daunting task to deal with a person who suffers from mood swings quite often. Not to worry, as now researchers at University of Michigan have developed an app that can gauge mood swings via voice analysis and alert you.

The app can detect early signs of mood changes in people with bipolar disorder.

The researchers call the project PRIORI, because they hope it will yield a biological marker to prioritise bipolar disorder care to those who need it most urgently to stabilise their moods.

The app runs in the background on an Android smart phone and automatically monitors the patients' voice patterns during any calls made.

The computer programme analyses many characteristics of the sounds - and silences - of each conversation.

Only the patient's side of everyday phone calls is recorded.

The researchers presented the findings at the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing in Italy this week.

The technology could also help people with other conditions.

Bipolar disorder affects millions of people worldwide and can have devastating effects including suicide.
