Mumbai: Mumbai is in the throes of a leptospirosis scare after the infection claimed yet another life making it the 16th casualty in July alone.
Vinod Maurya, a 31-year-old man succumbed to leptospirosis in Vikhroli on Sunday, taking the toll up to sixteen this year.
According to reports, doctors have said that the disease is easily curable with antibiotics, but most victims came so late for treatment that they died soon after hospitalisation.
The casualties were mostly among people from the western suburbs of the city, under the age of 30.So far, 13 of the 16 deaths have been reported from areas between Malad and Dahisar.
Up to 53 cases of leptospirosis have been detected in the city this year, the majority of which have occurred after the heavy flooding due to rains in June.
Meanwhile, city health officials have reportedly said that they will sensitise around 10,000 private clinics across the city with respect to the disease.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that spreads through flooded or stagnant water contaminated with urine of infected rats.
