India will contribute $10 million to the UN fund to combat the Ebola epidemic that has claimed the lives of over 2,600 people in west Africa.

New Delhi: India will contribute $10 million to the UN fund to combat the Ebola epidemic that has claimed the lives of over 2,600 people in west Africa.

An additional amount of $2 million will be given for the purchase of protective gear to tackle the fast-spreading Ebola virus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the contribution just before his departure to participate in the UN General Assembly Thursday, an official statement said.

On September 12, India had contributed $500,000 to the WHO to prevent the spread of Ebola.

According to latest estimates, there are now more than 5,000 cases of the disease which has claimed over 2,600 lives mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
