Mangalore: Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader has urged the builders here to help in prevention of mosquito breeding in the city by assigning a worker to clean stagnant waters in construction sites regularly.
Speaking at a malaria awareness programme organised by Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India (CREDAI) Mangalore along with the city corporation here yesterday, he said that such a step would help in controlling malaria in the city to a great extent.
Voicing his concern over the rising malaria cases in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Khader said that 61 per cent of malaria cases in the state are from the undivided DK district. Of the 5329 malaria cases reported in DK, 4822 are from the city. The city has become a breeding source of epidemic diseases, he said.
The minister urged CREDAI to adopt a lake on a pilot project and develop it and said such initiatives would have a long-lasting effect than organising awareness programmes. This would also provide comfortable environment to city dwellers.
