Beijing: Doctors in China have saved a man’s severed hand by attaching it to his foot for a month, according to reports.
The man, Xiao Wei, had his right hand accidentally cut off by a drilling machine while working last month in Changde, Hunan Province.
Doctors in the provincial capital Changsha grafted the hand onto his lower leg as it was too severely cut to be re-attached right away.
Severed limbs can be saved if their blood supply is restored within several hours of their amputation, depending on the circumstances.
According to reports, Xiao is recuperating after his hand has been re-attached to his arm earlier this month. Doctors said he will need to undergo several further surgeries and rehabilitation therapy to regain full use of the limb.
