Chhattisgarh: Remember 'Vicky Donor'! The movie not only sparked off an interest in sperm donation among men but also dealt with the stigma attached to the practice.

In a bid to bring joy to childless couples' lives, Chhattisgarh's first 'sperm bank' has been opened. A private test tube baby centre in Raipur has started with the noble cause under the rules and guidelines of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

According to Dr Manoj Chellaney, who runs the sperm bank, “Biopsy is done on men who couldn’t produce sperms. If sperms are available at the time of biopsy, then In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is done. There are other guidelines too like at the time of taking sperm sample, proper blood test is done to screen for HIV. Later it is kept for some time and again undergoes repeat HIV test”.

Further, the sperms are preserved by freezing them and can be brought in use within 10-15 years.

It is only after when the doctor is satisfied with the screening tests of the donor, the registration is done.
