Jaipur: Prevalence rates of diabetes are 15 to 20 per cent in urban areas and about half of it in rural areas, according to a government report.

Lodha coordinated a five-member development team of national experts to prepare the "Standard treatment guidelines on endocrinology" for Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) poses a great threat to the health of our nation, it costs dearly on the exchequer as the treatment of acute and chronic complications of diabetes are expensive. Beside this, the cost of day-to-day medication, tests, monitoring and loss of productive work due to illness, Lodha said.
The report was drafted and submitted to the MHFW under the Regulation of Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010?recently, he said.
Diabetes Mellitus is a global epidemic. Type-2 diabetes which forms almost 95 per cent of the total diabetes in India is largely a preventable disorder and India harbours more than 50 million diabetics, he said, quoting MHFW comprehensive guidelines being adopted by the states.
Earlier, no structured treatment protocol and uniformity in treatment did not exist, and available sources of knowledge was very poor at the national level, he said, adding now the said standard treatment guidelines would be beneficial to general physicians sitting in far-flung areas where endocrinologists are not available easily.
The dossier also provides basic medical information to patients of early endocrinology disorders which includes diabetes, thyroid, osteoporosis, and growth-related disorder, he said.
