Amethi: Addressing an election meeting in Amethi, Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday launched a direct attack on BJP`s Smriti Irani saying that the Gandhis always stood by the people of Amethi while she (Irani) is coming here to fight Rahul Gandhi not for the people. “All those contesting against Rahul are here just to contest against him. But our hearts are always here,” Priyanka said.
Attacking Irani, who is contesting from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, Priyanka asked if she ever went back to Chandni Chowk after contesting election from there adding that “we never left the people of Amethi”.
While asking the people of Amethi to stand by the Gandhis, she invoked her father Rajiv Gandhi`s legacy and slammed the critics of Rahul saying that like Rajiv he also have political foresight. “When Rajiv ji brought in the computer revolution, he was criticised by the same people who criticise Rahul ji now,” she told people here, adding that people of Amethi loved Rajiv ji as much as me or Rahul loved him.
Highlighting the development work done by Rahul in Amethi, Priyanka said over 12 lakh women in Uttar Pradesh`s Amethi constituency were directly benefited by the welfare schemes which were started by her brother adding that Rahul has done a lot of work for the upliftment of the people here, socially and economically.
Priyanka sought to strike an emotional chord with the electorate by saying, "When I left Amethi to look after Rae Bareli, I wept profusely , because I am so emotionally linked to you."
