Thiruvananthapuram: Vice-President Hamid Ansari will on Wednesday officially declare Kerala for becoming country's first state to achieve cent percent primary education.
Ansari, who will be arriving in the state on a 3-day visit, will make the announcement on January 13 at a function at the senate hall in Thiruvananthapuram.
Education Minister PK Abdu Rabb confirmed the news and said that Kerala has achieved total primary education. The state aims at educating people who had been unable to complete their primary education to people aged between 1 to 50, through its literacy programme Athulyam - which is carried out in two phases. The first phase of Athulyam programme commenced in 2010.
In 2015, at least 2.6 lakh people took the fourth standard equivalency exam under which 2.2 lakh qualified. The equivalency examination was held at 6,613 centers across the state and the qualifying mark was set at 30/75 in English and 20/50 in other subjects.
The second phase of the Athulyam project was implemented as part of the Mission 676 of the State government.
