Coimbatore, Nov 12: The colleagues and students of
Dr Salim Ali, renowned ornithologist, on Sunday formally launched
a charitable trust dedicated to nature conservation, a cause
for which Ali devoted his life.
The trust 'Salim Ali Foundation' is a real tribute to
Ali on his 110th birth anniversary, who fought for
conservation and sustained development throughout his life, Dr
V S Vijayan, one of the trustees, told reporters here.
The foundation, with environmentalists and green activists
as its trustees and members, would create awareness among the
public about the challenges being faced by various
environmental problems in the modern era, Vijayan said.
The foundation would approach politicians and legislators
and make them aware about the effect of over usage of
pesticides on the ecosystem and bring a comprehensive policy
to ban conversion of wetland, which is now marked as
wasteland, Vijayan said.
It would also seriously discuss other current issues
related to special economic zones, threats to life-support
systems including loss of biodiversity, contamination of air,
water and food, he said.
