New Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday issued notices to the Centre and states of Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bangal on a PIL seeking its direction to prohibit them from throwing waste material from factories into river Ganga and check pollution.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam also sought the response of Central Pollution Control Board.
The court passed the order on the PIL filed by one Ashok Narain Sharma, a resident of Patiala, seeking its interference in the matter to protect Ganga from getting polluted.

Agreeing to hear his plea, the bench tagged his petition along with other similar cases pending before it.
The petitioner submitted that the authorities be directed to construct a waste water channel parallel to Ganga to ensure that waste material does not get mixed up with the river water.
