New Delhi: With visibility improving, flights resumed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport. Around 100 domestic and international flights got delayed as dense fog enveloped the national capital region on Tuesday.
Though flight operations have resumed delays will continue because of the backlog.
Meanwhile, road traffic, which also bore the brunt of the poor visibility as traffic moved slowly in most part of the city is now running smoothly.
Early morning, the visibility on all the three runways at the IGI airport was below 50 metres delaying flights by up to two to three hours.
The fog started to become dense around 5 AM and the visibility went below 50 metres, the minimum required for landing under poor visibility conditions using the CAT-III B instrument landing system (ILS).
The minimum visibility for an aircraft to take off under low visibility conditions are between 125 to 150 metres, depending on the size of the plane.
On Monday, about 140 flights were diverted at IGI airport throwing normal life out of gear.
Fog started to descend upon the city around midnight and it engulfed the entire city by this morning, reducing the general visibility to almost zero.
Poor visibility affected air traffic, causing inconvenience to the air travellers.
A senior Met department official said that Delhi and national capital region would witness fog or dense fog till forenoon and partly cloudy sky during the week.
