Delhi Cabinet passes much-awaited Jan Lokpal Bill to fight corruption

New Delhi: In a move that has revived the hopes of masses who carried out massive campaigns demanding a bill to curb down corruption, the AAP-led Delhi Cabinet on Wednesday passed the Jan Lokpal Bill which will soon be tabled in the Assembly.

Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia took to Twitter and wrote, “The historic Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill is passed by Delhi Cabinet. Congrats to all who have spent days and nights for it.”

“The demand for Lokpal that echoed across India birthed Aam Aadmi Party. We promised a political path to it and today,” said AAP's twitter handle.

Following the decision, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the bill will be tabled in the Assembly soon while Sisodia said that the Business Advisory Committee will take a call on when to table the bill.

A senior government official said the government will make every possible effort to get it passed in this ongoing Winter Session.

After forming the government in Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised that the party will introduce Jan Lokpal Bill to bring down corruption in the capital.

During his 49-day stint as CM, Kejriwal had resigned from the post citing reasons over deadlock on Jan Lokpal Bill.

The AAP government has decided to introduce six bills, including Code of Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill, Delhi School Education Amendment Bill and Minimum Wages Amendment Bill in the Assembly session which is to continue till November 28.
