AAP's Gokalpur MLA Fateh Singh to be Speaker of Delhi Assembly

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party's Gokalpur MLA Fateh Singh has been picked by the party to be the next Speaker of Delhi Assembly, reports claimed on Wednesday.

Fateh Singh, who has defeated BJP leader Ranjeet Singh by a margin of over 30,000 votes in the recently held Delhi Assembly elections, may resume the office shorty, as per ANI.

The former BJP MLA and deputy speaker of Delhi Assembly, Fateh Singh had joined the AAP in December 2014, stating that the BJP makes empty promises and that he had confidence in AAP's actions.

51-year-old Singh is a Bachelor of Arts from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in UP. He will succeed MS Dhir as Speaker, who had left AAP in November 2014 and joined the BJP.

Fateh Singh had contested the 1993 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections on the BJP ticket from the Nand Nagari assembly constituency, which was reserved for scheduled castes. He then became the member of the First Legislative Assembly of Delhi and was elected the deputy speaker from 1995 to 1998.

Meanwhile, the AAP today granted Leader of Opposition post to one of the three successful BJP candidates in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Kumar Gupta.
