Jiram valley attack: Congress to observe 'martyrdom day' today

For the second consecutive year, the Congress party in Chhattisgarh will observe 'martyrdom day' on Monday to pay homage to the victims, including senior state party leaders, of May 25 Jiram valley Naxal attack.

Raipur: For the second consecutive year, the Congress party in Chhattisgarh will observe 'martyrdom day' on Monday to pay homage to the victims, including senior state party leaders, of May 25 Jiram valley Naxal attack.

"We will pay tribute to our martyred senior party leaders - Mahendra Karma, Nandkumar Patel, Uday Mudliyar and others on the second anniversary of Jiram Valley incident at all district and block headquarters tomorrow," party's state President Bhupesh Baghel said today.

The party which is the main opposition in the state will hold several programmes at all district and block headquarters to mark the day.

Baghel will take part in the programme scheduled at Bastar district while the leader of opposition in the Assembly T S Singhdeo will take part at Surguja and former union minister Charandas Mahant and deputy leader of opposition Renu Jogi will participate in the programme at Bilaspur.

Besides, other party leaders will be present in programmes at different places across the state.

On May 25, 2013, Naxals had ambushed the convoy of Congress leaders in Jiram valley of Bastar's Darbha region when they were on way to Jagdalpur from Sukma while returning from a parivartan rally.

A total of 31 people, including then PCC chief Nandkumar Patel, his son Dinesh, former Leader of Opposition Mahendra Karma and ex-MLA Uday Mudliyar, were killed and several others injured in the incident.

Former Union Minister Vidayacharan Shukla, who was injured in the attack, later died at a Gurgaon hospital while undergoing treatment.

The state government had constituted a judicial probe into the incident while Centre had tasked National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate it.
