Patna: In a tragic incident, at least five children drowned during Chhath Puja celebrations in Muzaffarpur district in Bihar on Monday. 

Hundreds of devotees had assembled at a 'Ghat' in the wee hours today on the fourth and the last day of the Chhath Puja. The children, who had gone to take a bath at the 'Ghat' during the puja, began to lose their balance and drown in the river.

A search and rescue operation recovered the bodies at 11am. 

This is the second incident in a matter of few hours. 

In an another accident, six persons including three children were crushed to death after being hit by a train near Rambhadrapur station when they were returning from Chhath Puja celebrations in Darbhanga.

The group was crossing the tracks after performing Chhath Puja and did not see the approaching train due to morning fog.

The accident took place near Rambhadrapur railway station, around 35 km from Samastipur town, Senior DCM Samastipur division, Birendra Kumar said.

After the incident, people resorted to protest carrying the dead bodies, affecting the movement of trains between Samastipur and Darbhanga section.
