Patna: It’s a sort of historic day for Bihar as the state’s 243 legislators on Tuesday said that they will not drink and stay away from alcohol.
As per an NDTV report, while throwing some light on prohibition law in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, “It's a historic day. It's a clear message that everyone is dedicated to making prohibition work."
Under a new law in the state, a person found making or selling home-made liquor that leads to death of consumers will be punished with death sentence. Also, if a person falls sick due to consumption of liquor then the person making or selling the liquor will be punished with life sentence.
The new law will apply from April 1, 2016 onwards.
The Chief Minister has said that in Phase 1 of prohibition, all shops selling country liquor in rural areas will be shut down on Friday. In cities like Patna and Gaya, alcohol will be available, but only at government-run outlets, said the NDTV report.
Furthermore, to control the menace of consumption of liquor in open, the new law will strictly deal with those found drinking at public places.
During Phase 2, alcohol will be completely banned. The next phase will be introduce six months later.
