Mumbai: One of India's most popular singers- Daler Mehndi - who made Bhangra popular worldwide rose to fame in the 1990s. His unique voice and style of singing won a million hearts and the albums that he cut became instant hits.
He also made a style statement by sporting a gold chain across his turban and wore long flashy robes over, a look that many aspiring artists have tried to imitate.

He has been convicted in a 2003 human trafficking case by Patiala Court on Friday and sentenced to 2-years in prison. After conviction Mehndi was granted bail by the Patiala Court.
A case against Mehndi, his brother Shamsher and some of his associates, was registered by the Patiala police following a complaint filed by one Bakshish Singh of Balbehra village in Punjab in 2003. The complainant had alleged that he had been duped by the Mehndi brothers who received lakhs of rupees from him on the pretext of sending him abroad as a member of the troupe of Daler Mehndi.
