Won't protest against Padmavati just for the sake of it: MNS

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will take a call on whether they will protest against director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati or not after watching the film.

"Will not protest just for the sake of it, we will watch the film first and if something is objectionable will discuss it with Sanjay Leela Bhansali," MNS leader Amey Khopkar said.

The MNS leader said on a day when the Rajput Karni Sena - an organisation of the upper caste Rajput community – called for a 'Bharat Bandh' on December 1 to protest against the release of the movie.

Several members of Rajput Karni Sena had earlier protested in Bengaluru against the film and pressed for a ban on it.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam has also threatened to block the release of the movie. ''Will take a decision this afternoon. Our union won't support person who distorts history for publicity of his film, we demand a ban. If Bhansali doesn't agree, our union won't let him shoot any film,'' Ram Kadam said.

Padmavati is based on the legend of Rani Padmini, a Hindu Rajput queen, mentioned in Padmavat - an Avadhi language epic poem written by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540.

The movie is slated to release on December 1. However, it has run into troubled waters over its plot, with some right-wing outfits calling it the wrong portrayal of the Rajput queen.
