Pune: In a tragic incident, a five-year-old boy got locked in an abandoned car in Maharashtra's Chakan and died due to suffocation.

The incident occurred when the child was playing with his friends in the afternoon. As it was hot, he got into a car parked nearby. The central lock of the car got activated and the boy got trapped inside.

When he did not return till evening, his family started searching for him. This is when they found the body of the boy in the car.

According to police officer Pratima Navale, the body of Karan Pandey was found in Chakan after a hectic six-hour search by his family, IANS reported. "As per available details, the car accidentally got locked and the boy could not get out. He remained trapped inside for nearly six hours before his body was found. We have registered an accidental death case and investigating," Navale said.

The boy reportedly had burns on his neck, face and head from the metal parts which heated up in the high day temperatures witnessed in Pune since the past one week.

No details of the vehicle owner or why the car has been abandoned for several weeks were immediately available.
