Thiruvananthapuram: A Kerala school is fighting a heated controversy which has erupted on the social media after the design of its new school uniform for girl students went viral.
This happened after a photographer named Zachariah Ponkunnam posted an image on his Facebook wall of three girls wearing the uniform of St. Alphonsa Public School, Aruvithura.
In the post, Ponkunnam stated that the school uniform was designed obscenely.
The post went viral and social media users slammed the school authorities accusing them of objectifying the bodies of minors. The post has been shared by more than 5000 users in a day.
One Noushad Thekkayil from Kozhikode filed a complaint against the school authorities with the Child Rights Commission over the inappropriateness of the school uniform. In the complaint, he has sought action against the school at the earliest.
However, the Principal has rejected the allegations and justified saying that the photo of the uniform which went viral on social media was in no way similar to the original uniform.
"They are spreading a photograph which has been photoshopped. We have not received any complaints from the parents regarding the uniform till now. We have given complaint with the police against such defamatory campaigns against the school. We have also appointed a five-member PTA executive committee to enquire whether there are any complaints regarding the school uniform. We would take further action after the report from the committee," The News Minute quoted the principal saying.
The Parent Teachers Association of the school too back the Principal's stand and stated that they have not received any complaint regarding the uniform.
Meanwhile, according to latest update, following the increasing outrage over the uniform, the school management has reportedly decided to change the uniform for its girl students.
According to the report, the 'half jacket' in the uniform will be replaced with an overcoat and the school management will bear all the expenses for it.
