Republic Day 2018: Traffic comes to a crawl in Delhi NCR, deadlock likely to continue

New Delhi: Monday morning blues turned several shades darker for commuters in Delhi and adjoining areas of the National Capital Region (NCR) as traffic jams were reported from several main and arterial roads across the city. The major reason for slow movement of vehicles was shutting down of major roads in Central Delhi due to dress rehearsal of the Republic Day parade in and around India Gate.

Jams were reported on roads around India Gate, ITO, Ring Road near South Extention, Lajpat Nagar, Maharani Bagh and all the way into Noida via DND. Incoming traffic from Noida too was affected due to barricades being put for security purposes. Delhi Traffic Police has already advised commuters to make use of Google Maps to navigate through city roads but despite several advisories issues, the ground situation on Monday morning was nothing short of being chaotic.

Shockingly, several emergency vehicles too were seen caught in the traffic jams.

The situation on Delhi roads is not expected to ease in the next few days with VIP movement and security cover adding to commuting woes. On Republic Day this Friday, several roads will remain shut for the parade while even Delhi Metro has announced boarding and deboarding to be barred at several key stations in the morning hours.
