NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha on Friday passed the Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which was moved by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The bill aims to amend the 2013 Companies Act under which certain classes of public companies are required to issue shares in dematerialised form only.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day. The proceedings of the Upper House will begin on Monday, July 29, at 11:00 am.

Lok Sabha on Friday witnessed uproarious scenes over Samajwadi Party's Azam Khan's alleged derogatory and sexist remark on BJP MP Rama Devi with lawmakers from across all parties demanding an unconditional apology from him. Khan had on Thursday triggered a political storm by commenting on BJP MP Rama Devi, when she was officiating as the Speaker.

Lok Sabha Speaker, after holding a meeting with Opposition parties' leaders, came to the conclusion that Azam Khan should apologise to BJP MP Rama Devi over his remarks.

The remarks made by Azam Khan did not go down well with Rama Devi, who said, “this is not the way to speak”. She directed that the Samajwadi Party leader’s remarks must be expunged. The SP leader, however, clarified that he considered Rama Devi his “sister” and did not intend any disrespect for her. On Friday, reacting to his statement, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the least the SP leader from Uttar Pradesh could do was apologise before the House.

Several women MPs too condemned Azam Khan's statement and demanded an unconditional apology from him. Both houses of Parliament are expected to witness unruly scenes as the NDA government intends to ensure the passage of key legislations while the Congress-led opposition is pressing the government for debate on key issues, including US President Donald Trump's recent Kashmir claim and mob lynching.

In a big boost for the ruling coalition, the Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the controversial triple talaq amid the Opposition walkout and the government accusing the Congress of dragging its feet on the legislation and contending that it was for the dignity and respect of women. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 that prohibits divorce by pronouncing talaq thrice in one go was passed with 303 votes in favour and 82 against.

Members of the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and several other parties staged a walkout over the Bill. The Janata Dal (United), a BJP ally, also opposed the Bill and walked out of the House saying it will create distrust among a particular community. The Bill will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha, where the opposition is numerically stronger than the ruling alliance.
