The Economic Survey 2018-19 was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in both the houses of Parliament, a day before she presents the Union Budget. The Survey expects that annual economic growth could accelerate to 7 percent in the 2019-20 fiscal year from an estimated 6.8 percent in the previous year.

The Economic survey includes the policy initiatives that the government will be taking and give a roadmap which it plans to follow to boost the economy.

The Budget that will be presented on Friday is the first budget of the Narendra Modi government after assuming office for the second time.

Taking a swipe at AAP Lok Sabha MP Bhagwant Mann for his changing subject during Zero Hour, Lok Sabha speaker OM Birla on Thursday said that he is an "educated" speaker. When Mann stood up from his desk and started speaking about problems Indians face in Indian embassies based in foreign countries, Birla asked him to sit down."If you want to change the subject during Zero Hour, then you have to take my permission. You have given the subject of regarding ... `salaries of teachers in Punjab`. I am a padha-likha (educated) speaker," Speaker said.

The Lok Sabha on Thursday began discussion on a bill that provides for voluntary use of Aadhaar number in physical or electronic form by authentication or offline verification with the consent of the individual. Moving The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019 for consideration and passage in the House, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government has saved Rs 7.48 lakh crore in the past five years using direct benefit transfer. "We have saved money siphoned off by middleman. Aadhar has proved its usefulness," he said.

Youngest Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha, 26-year old Chandrani Murmu of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) urged Centre to setup a steel plant in her constituency, Keonjhar in Odisha. Murmu, an engineering graduate was fielded in the recently held Lok Sabha polls by the BJD from Keonjhar against BJP`s Ananta Nayak.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector would contribute 50 per cent to India`s GDP in the next five years and would create five crore addition jobs in the sector. Replying to supplementaries in Lok Sabha during Question Hour, the minister also rejected opposition`s objections to his tall claims, saying he is the one who fulfils all the promises he makes. "The target should always be high. Sometimes it is fulfilled and sometimes we fail to fulfil it. We have set a target to contribute 50 per cent to India`s GDP for the next five years. We have created 11 crore jobs and would now create over 15 crore jobs. We will create 5 crore additional jobs," he informed the Lower house.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has tabled the Economic Survey in Rajya Sabha. The Economic Survey will be tabled in Lok Sabha at 12 noon. Thereafter it will be available on the ministry's official website.

Ahead of tabling the Economic Survey, Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy Subramanian hoped that the results for the hard work that has been put in are good for the economy. Also, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will move that the Bill to amend the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016 and further to amend the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and the Prevention of Money-laundering Act, 2002, be taken into consideration. Copies of the Economic Survey have been brought to Parliament. As per an IANS report, the Economic Survey is likely to come up with ideas with regard to the revival of overall growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and exports, on infrastructure, as well as NPAs including bank recaps, employment and capital market and public debt.
