Karnataka Live Updates: Karnataka: BJP in no rush to form government, to wait for SC verdict

Following the trust vote, BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa declared that he would meet Governor Vajubhai Vala to stake claim for government formation.

The 14-month old Congress-JDS government in Karnataka fell on Tuesday as the alliance lost the trust vote in Assembly, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form government in the state. Following the trust vote, BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa declared that he would meet Governor Vajubhai Vala to stake claim for government formation after consulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Shortly after the trust vote, HD Kumaraswamy resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. While his resignation was accepted, the Governor asked him to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister till government formation. The Congress slammed the BJP, accusing it of carrying out “one of the most heinous” horse-trading in history of Indian polity. It is expected to be another day full of political drama in the southern state.

Former prime minister and JDS leader HD Deve Gowda says, "We have no regret of having the last coalition government. We are not accusing anyone, including the former Chief Minister and other senior ministers." Targeting the BJP, the veteran leader said, "The way in which things have happened in Karnataka, I have never seen in my political career. The way in which a national party, BJP leadership allowed this type of horse trading, I have never seen in my life."

BJP sources said that the party is going to form the government in Karnataka but it is no rush to stake claim to form the government. Sources added that the BJP will wait for Supreme Court's verdict in this matter. BS Yeddyurappa will become the chief minister because he is already the party president in Karnataka and also the leader of legislators.

Rebel Karnataka MLAs, who has approached the Supreme Court for trust vote in the state, informed the bench about the development. However, the bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi did not allow them to withdraw their plea, saying any decision would be taken in the presence of senior lawyers. Junior lawyers had appeared before the court.
