Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha moves Bill to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. She said, "We are trying to bring this amendment to protect the depositors. As in some unfortunate situation in banks, depositors are put to hardship. The Centre said there has been no infiltration along the Sino-Indian border in the last six months, while 47 infiltration bids have been reported along the Indo-Pak border during the period. The Union Home Ministry also informed the Rajya Sabha that 594 attempts of infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistani militants have been reported in the last three years, of which 312 were successful.

Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai on Wednesday clarified that the Central government has no proposal to amend the Official Languages Act to include Scheduled languages other than Hindi and English as its official languages as suggested by the Supreme Court.The Minister clarified this in a written reply in Rajya Sabha to the unstarred question posed by Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) founder and Member of Parliament (MP) Vaiko. The Centre on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that it would welcome any order for speedy trial of political leaders facing criminal charges and corruption cases. The central government said that the top court can fix a time frame for the competition of trials in pending cases against legislators, sitting and former. The Centre had recently informed the top court that there are nearly 4,442 cases pending against sitting and former MPs and MLAs in different courts of the country. Read more here

Parliament on Wednesday passed a bill to accord the status of an institution of national importance to a Jamnagar-based cluster of Ayurveda institutes. The Bill - 'The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda Bill, 2020' - was passed by a voice vote in Rajya Sabha. Lok Sabha has already approved the bill in the last session, in which three Jamnagar, Gujarat-based institutes -- Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Gulabkunwerba Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya and Institute of Ayurveda Pharmaceutical Sciences --would be conglomerated. The government on Wednesday said more than 30 vaccine candidates for coronavirus have been supported, and three of them are in advance stages of trials now, while four are in advanced pre-clinical development stage. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also told the Rajya Sabha that 13 clinical trials of repurposed drugs have been undertaken to build a portfolio of therapeutic options for COVID-19 patients. "More than 30 vaccine candidates have been supported which are in different stages of development, 3 candidates are in advanced stage of Phase I, II, III trials and more than 4 are in advanced pre-clinical development stage," he said. Amid simmering tension between India and China along Line and Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh, some suspicious Chinese activities have been noticed along Uttrakhand border. Sources told Zee Media that a hut-like structure has been spotted recently near Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal in Chinese side. It is believed China is engaged in construction activity in Cinese side General Area Jojo village Champa Maidan. Notably, the Jojo village is around -8 kms from Tinkar-Lipu pass of Nepal.
