India saw a jump of over 10,000 novel coronavirus cases on Tuesday (June 16, 2020), taking the total number of infections to over 3.43 lakh, while the toll rose to 9900 with 380 more deaths.

India is the world's fourth worst-hit nation by the novel coronavirus infection in terms of a total number of confirmed cases after the US, Brazil and Russia and is ranked sixth with regard to the number of recoveries, after the US, Brazil, Russia, Italy and Germany.

The central and state governments stepped up their focus on ramping up testing capabilities and the availability of beds for treating those infected with the dreaded virus infection. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a consultation with chief ministers on Tuesday (June 16) and Wednesday (June 17) on ways to check the spread of the virus as India exits the lockdown. The PM is expected to seek suggestions from the Chief Ministers and draw up a common strategy in deciding the future course of action to deal with the strategy.  

This would be the PM Modi' sixth round of consultation with the chief ministers, the last being on May 11.

Delhi: Following directions of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, all hospitals in the national capital, (Central and State Government and private), today complied with the decision taken at a meeting chaired by Amit Shah on June 14, by speeding up cremation/last rites of bodies of COVID-19 patients.

The hospital staff performed the last rites of most COVID-19 deceased with consent/presence of their families and relatives. Last rites of the remaining 36 deceased will be done by tomorrow as their Next Of Kin are not in Delhi at present. The Ministry of Home Affairs has given strict directions to hospitals that going forward there should be no delays in performing last rites.

Rajasthan: With 115 more COVID-19 cases and one death reported in Rajasthan, the tally for coronavirus cases in the state stands at 13,096, said the state Health Department. These cases were reported from Bharatpur (68), Jaipur (21), Jhunjhunu (08), Tonk (06), Dausa (04), Sirohi (04), Jhalawar (03) and Bhilwara (01) districts of the state. As per the official data, there are 3,000 active cases while 9,794 have recovered and 9,567 were discharged. The total number of fatalities stands at 302 in the state. (ANI)

Haryana: CM has directed to conduct a survey of vacant buildings in Gurugram dist so that they can be used for isolation of COVID patients when required. He also directed to monitor sample testing in private laboratories and to ensure timely uploading of their reports. He also said that it is necessary to enter name & address of the person who gets his test conducted. He assured that a person belonging to any state can get his sample tested for COVID in Gurugram, he only has to give correct address details.
