India on Thursday reported a total of 2,86,579 coronavirus cases with 1,37,448 active cases, 1,41,029 cured cases and 8,102 fatalities.

New Delhi: India on Thursday reported a total of 2,86,579 coronavirus cases with 1,37,448 active cases, 1,41,029 cured cases and 8,102 fatalities. The country registered the highest spike in new cases and deaths with 9,996 new cases of infections and 357 fatalities reported within the last 24 hours, as per the Health Ministry data.

Maharashtra remained the worst hit state in the country with a total of 94,041 total cases including 3,438 deaths and 44,517 recoveries, followed by Tamil Nadu (36,841).

The global number of COVID-19 cases has increased to over 7.3 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 416,201, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognizance of proper treatment of Covid-19 patients and dignified handling of dead bodies. A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MR Shah will conduct the hearing on the matter on Friday. Chief Justice SA Bobde took cognizance of the letter written by senior advocate Dr Ashwani Kumar, highlighting various incidents violating the citizen`s right to die with dignity amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Kumar urged the Chief Justice to take suo moto notice of news reports on incidents, where persons infected with Covid-19 were ill-treated and the dead bodies of persons, who succumbed to the infection, were not handled in a dignified manner. Haryana reported 12 coronavirus deaths on Thursday, the worst single-day toll in the state due to the virus, as total infections neared 6,000. The hardest-hit Gurgaon reported 6 deaths, Faridabad 4 and Ambala and Rohtak reported 1 death each, according to a state health department bulletin. On Monday, Haryana reported 11 coronavirus deaths. At least 64 people have died due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, including 22 in Faridabad, 19 in Gurgaon, four in Rohtak and three in Ambala. 

Among the 389 cases reported on Thursday, Gurgaon reported 191, taking the total number of cases in the district to 2,737, of which 1,760 are active. Faridabad reported 74 cases, Ambala 13, Palwal 10, Jind 3, Karnal 17, Yamunanagar 9, Fatehabad and Mahendragarh 7 each, Rewari 8, Rohtak 29, Hisar, Bhiwani, Sirsa, Panchkula and Jhajjar 4 each, while Panipat reported 1 case. Tally of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra reaches 97,648 with 3,607 new patients found, 152 deaths take toll to 3,590, Health official told PTI. A PIL has been moved in the Delhi High Court seeking a direction to the AAP government to impose a strict lockdown in the national capital in view of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi. The plea, by a lawyer and his office boy, has said the Delhi government itself admitted there would be around one lakh COVID-19 cases in the national capital by end of June and the number would escalate to around 2.25 lakh by mid-July and over 5.5 lakh by July end. In such a scenario, the government should consider imposing strict lockdown in Delhi, the plea by lawyer Anirban Mondal and his employee Pawan Kumar has contended. (PTI)

Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja on Thursday informed that following a discussion with the private health sector, they have pledged full support to tackle the state government`s initiatives in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. About 100 officials from the private health sector took part in the online discussion. "They have pledged their full support to the state government in treating COVID patients and also other ailments. They have agreed to provide their laboratories and ventilator facilities, if a need arises," Shailaja told ANI.

Uttar Pradesh on Thursday reported 24 more coronavirus deaths and 478 new cases, the biggest single-day spike in both numbers so far as the state battles a COVID-19 surge. The death toll in the state now is 345, after three consecutive days of record highs, with the coronavirus tally reaching 12,088. Principal Secretary, Health, Amit Mohan Prasad said 7,292 of the total infected have recovered. The state has 4,451 active COVID-19 cases. He said 15,079 tests were conducted in UP on Wednesday, which is so far the highest in the state. (PTI)

There have been around 2,098 coronavirus deaths in Delhi, said Jai Prakash, Chairperson, Standing Committee, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on Thursday."From March till June 10, in all three municipal corporations of Delhi, there have been around 2,098 COVID-19 death cases for which funerals have been held. These all were coronavirus positive cases. We have given separate records of around 200 suspected cases," Prakash told ANI. According to the last bulletin by the Delhi government, there have been 984 coronavirus deaths in the national capital. Earlier in the day, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain had said that there are 32,810 coronavirus cases in the national capital including 19,581 active cases. (ANI)

A 70-year-old Gulf returnee died of COVID-19 at a hospital in Kannur district, taking the toll due to the disease in the state to 18, officials said on Thursday. The man from Irittiin Kannur district died Wednesday night shortly after he was shifted to the hospital on his samples testing positive for the infection. He had history of heart ailment. He had reached the state from Muscat on May 27. His son and wife have also tested positive for COVID-19. "The cremation will be held now after following all necessary health precautions," a senior health department official said. The state had reported 65 cases on Wednesday and the total infection count touched 2,160. While 1,238 people are under treatment for the infection, 905 have recovered so far. (PTI)

The death toll due to coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday rose to 345 after it reported a record 24 fatalities, while 478 fresh cases pushed the tally in the state to 12,088, officials said in Lucknow. The state has 4,451 active COVID-19 cases and 7,292 patients have recovered, Principal Secretary, Health, Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters here. He said 15,079 tests were conducted in UP on Wednesday, which is so far the highest in the state. Prasad said accredited social health activists (ASHAs) were visiting villages to trace migrants who have returned from other parts of the country and till now over 15 lakh migrant workers have been tracked. Samples of those who had symptoms of the dreaded virus have been sent for testing, he said. (PTI)

A newly constructed building, which was set to operate as the Burns and Plastic Surgery Block at the AIIMS here, will now be used temporarily as a dedicated facility for treating COVID-19 patients. The decision by the AIIMS authorities comes after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that Delhi will need 1.5 lakh beds in healthcare facilities by July 31 once people start coming to the city for treatment from other states. Officials said the 100 bed-facility, which is located next to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, is being readied for the care of coronavirus infected patients and is likely to be functional by the weekend. The number of COVID-19 cases has crossed 400 in Dehradun district out of whom 216 are being treated, District Magistrate Ashish Srivastav said. According to the Uttarakhand state COVID-19 Control Room, 40,872 samples have been tested out of which 33,369 have tested negative. There are 1,562 positive cases whereas 831 persons have recovered. According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country is 2,86,579, including 1,37,448 active cases as on Thursday. While 1,41,028 patients have recovered after treatment, 8,102 deaths due to the infection have been reported in the country so far. (ANI)

31 more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Manipur, taking the tally of coronavirus cases in the state to 342 on Thursday, said the state government. Out of the total, 279 are active cases. A total of 13 cases were reported from Imphal West and Tamenglong, two each from Kakching and Ukhrul and one from Bishnupur. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country is 2,86,579, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Out of the total number of cases, 1,37,448 are active, while 1,41,029 have been cured/discharged/migrated, while the death toll stands at 8,102. (ANI)

The Telangana State BJP unit on Thursday attacked the TRS government in the state for "officially triggered community transmission" by its own acts of omission and deviation from COVID-19 pandemic management protocols set by Central government and ICMR."Junior Doctors of Gandhi Hospital have openly stated that over 500 `COVID-19 positive` patients have been discharged prematurely without COVID-19 tests into the general population two days back. Changed ICMR guidelines have nothing do with this brazen and dangerous act by the state health administration, which can trigger a massive community transmission in the GHMC area and in the entire state," BJP said in a release. The Tamil Nadu government has Been transparent in reporting COVID-19 deaths and none can hide information, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said on Thursday, rejecting claims of under-reporting of fatalities. He also asserted there was no community transmission of coronavirus in the state, which has reported 1,500 plus fresh cases for four successive days till Wednesday with the tally crossing the 36,000 mark. A day after the government set up a reconciliation committee to look into alleged mismatch of COVID-19 deaths, Palaniswami said it was issuing a COVID-19 bulletin on a daily basis furnishing data on aspects including testing, recoveries, active cases and deaths.
