New Delhi: The all-party meeting, called by the Centre to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan, began on Thursday. Leaders of several political parties are attending the meeting, which comes at a time when India is evacuating its citizens from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Ladakh: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday arrived in Leh to inaugurate the Parliamentary Outreach Programme for the empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the Union Territory on August 27.
According to the press statement released by the office of Lok Sabha Speaker on Wednesday, "The Parliamentary Outreach Programme for the empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions is a unique initiative of the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. A first of its kind program, it is intended to strengthen the institutions of governance and planning at the grass-root level."

Delhi: A fresh spell of rain is expected in the national capital and adjoining areas in northwest India from August 29 as the monsoon trough is expected to shift towards the plains from the foothills of the Himalayas, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Delhi and other areas in northwest India are currently witnessing a partial "break monsoon" phase, weather experts said.
"The entire monsoon trough lies close to the foothills of the Himalayas. It is likely to remain there till tomorrow (August 26)," the IMD had said in a statement on Wednesday.
R K Jenamani, a senior scientist at the IMD, said the region is experiencing a "weak monsoon" at present. (PTI)

Rajasthan: The voting for the first phase of the Rajasthan panchayat polls in six districts to elect zila parishad and panchayat samiti members will be held today. As many as 519 seats will go to the polls while elections to two seats were postponed, according to a spokesperson of the state election commission.
The spokesperson said the polling will take place from 7.30 AM to 5.30 PM at 3,599 booths in Bharatpur, Dausa, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur and Sirohi districts. “Due to litigation reasons, elections of two members, one each in Jalsu and Virat Nagar panchayat samiti, have been postponed,” the official said.

Afghanistan: The State Department warned US citizens at the gates outside of the airport in Kabul to leave "immediately" due to threats. "US citizens who are at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate now should leave immediately," a security alert from the US Embassy in Kabul said.
"Because of security threats outside the gates of Kabul airport, we are advising US citizens to avoid traveling to the airport & to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a US govt representative to do so," said US Embassy in Kabul. (ANI)
